Moments at the Gate: My Experience Volunteering at the Main Entrance of Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava 2026

When I signed up to participate in the 64th Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava (BGU) as a volunteer through the Youth for Seva initiative, I expected to gain general experience in helping
to organize the event. Instead, I found myself involved in a unique lesson about community, crowd management, and leadership.
By volunteering at the main entrance, I had the opportunity to engage with thousands of BGU visitors and ensure the safety and organization of this large-scale public event.

Crowd control and venue management

As the first point of contact, volunteers at the main entrance serve as traffic regulators, providing guidance and assistance to vehicles, pedestrians, and visitors to the exhibition.
They also help to maintain order at the entrance by directing families, senior visitors, and artists to the appropriate queues and ensuring a steady flow of people into the exhibition grounds.
Furthermore, volunteers provide first-point-of-contact for visitors by answering attendees’ questions about the fair’s logistics. Finally, they help to keep the exhibition grounds accessible
and safe and provide general crowd control at the entrance and throughout the Bengaluru Ganesha Utsava venue.

Fostering visitors Engagement

As a volunteer at the main entrance, I interacted with a cross-section of Bengaluru Ganesha Utsava visitors, including families, artists, and VIPs. I learned that effective crowd management
start with understanding the needs of the exhibition’s visitors. By being attentive and supportive of large groups and individual visitors and providing first-point-of-contact assistance,
I was able to provide a high level of service and manage crowds effectively. Furthermore, I learned that large-scale events such as Bengaluru Ganesha Utsav require excellent organizational
and communication skills to ensure the safety and convenience of thousands of visitors.

Key takeaways

I gained much-needed experience while volunteering at the main entrance to the Bengaluru Ganesha Utsav. This experience provided me with insight into the critical responsibilities involved
in organizing large-scale events. In particular, my work at the main entrance taught me how to manage crowds, provide directions, and develop my communication skills. Furthermore,
it allowed me to witness the power of Seva, or selfless service, that volunteers provide to thousands of BGU visitors every day.

Heartfelt gratitude

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Youth for Seva for organizing this volunteering opportunity. Helping at the main entrance of the Bengaluru Ganesha Utsava has been
an eye-opening and enriching experience. By participating in the Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava, I had the opportunity to give back to the local community while gaining new skills
and invaluable experience.
