From a Volunteer to a Change Maker: My Transformative Journey with Youth for Seva-Deepak Bhandari

The Small Seed of a Big Change

My journey with Youth for Seva (YFS) began in 2017, quite simply, with a plantation drive. To be honest, my primary intention was just to collect a certificate. I didn’t realize that while I was planting a sapling in the ground, YFS was planting a seed of purpose in my heart.

When I first visited the office and met the coordinators, something shifted. I didn’t just see a workplace; I felt a sense of belonging (Apnapan). Their sheer dedication and tireless effort to serve society inspired me deeply. I realised that if they could give so much of themselves, so could I.

The Joy of Service

I transitioned from an occasional volunteer to a regular one. Whether it was teaching children at Slum Learning Centres or being part of the core team when the NMMS (National Means Cum-Merit Scholarship) exam prep started in Delhi, every moment was a lesson. Training students for Navoudit and NMMS wasn’t just about academics, it was about giving them a fair shot at a better future.

When the world came to a standstill during COVID-19, our spirit didn’t. Being on the ground, delivering medicines and food to those in need—taught me the true meaning of empathy. There is a unique, incomparable satisfaction in knowing you’ve contributed to someone’s well-being. It’s the kind of fullfilment that brings a deep, peaceful sleep at night, knowing you made a difference.

When Passion Met Profession

In 2022, life came full circle. I received a call asking if I was interested in the role of a Delhi Coordinator. My passion and my career path were finally aligning. Without a second thought, I said, yes. Joining YFS officially as a Volunteer Management Coordinator on August 22, 2022, was one of the best decisions of my life. The organisation has shaped me in ways I never imagined

I started as a shy and hesitant person, but through my journey, I’ve grown more confident and comfortable communicating with others. Leading sessions and working with diverse groups improved my public speaking skills, while managing volunteers taught me discipline and time management. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to learn from inspiring mentors who guided my growth. Today, I no longer see this as just work, it’s a mission. I believe volunteering not only helps society but also transforms you into a better version of yourself.
