Namaste,
YFS Hyderabad volunteers have been working hard for the past several months to collect student information for the YFS scholarship program. The task was not easy. We wanted to collect information from the children belonging to the poorest of the poor, verifying their background and meeting each student personally. Finally we have accomplished that task. We have collected information from 158 students belonging to rural India and 79 students from the urban slums. [A total of 490 students were finally sponsored through the scheme]
What is the YFS Hyderabad ‘Vidya Daan’ initiative?
YFS Hyderabad ‘Vidya Daan’ scheme involves the following salient points:
- Contribution by Donor of Rs 300 per month per child. Minimum contribution of Rs 900. Annual sponsorship is Rs 3600.
- Each child can be sponsored by one or more donors. Donor can support one or more students.
- Sponsorship covers education expenses including tuition during school days.
- Each donor can also volunteer to be a mentor of a child.
- Donor gets status reports of the student twice in a year. Donor can be in direct touch with teacher/warden of the student to check progress. There is will one annual meeting of Mentors and the Children.
- All donations are tax exempt under 80G of Indian income tax act.

Profile of Rural Students
We have focussed on students belonging to the primitive tribal groups. These tribes are the most backward in our country and are struggling for survival. They are in need of education the most. We have chosen students from families whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 20,000. In some cases it is as low as Rs 5,000. These students are the first generation to be educated in their families. Several YFS volunteers have personally met these students. YFS has closely worked with Vanavasi Kalyan Parishad (www.vanavasi.org) and Vidya Bharati (www.vidyabharati.org), organizations of nationwide reach and high reputation for collecting this information. YFS will also collaborate with them for Funds disbursement.
